Drainfield problems

Heavy Storms With A Septic System

Drainfield problems

After a heavy rain, septic problems can be common. Significant rainfall can quickly flood the ground around
the drainfield leaving it saturated and making it impossible for water to flow out of your septic system. When a situation like this happens the water will have nowhere to go. the water eventually travels back through the system and into your home. Septic problems can be worse if the system has not been properly maintained. Septic companies are often called out to make repairs to the tank components, but the drainfield is still saturated and not operating properly. This could be due to a saturated absorption field or the drainfield has reached the end of its useful life.

The best way to handle a heavy rainfall is to make sure your septic system and storm drains are in good shape before the heavy storms. it is highly recommended to direct runoff water away from the drainfield to keep the surrounding soils from getting oversaturated. Clean and direct all rain gutters to properly collect and drain water away from the drainfield area. Do not drive any heavy equipment or other vehicles that could compact the soil over the drainfield. Compacted soils can reduce the soil absorption and reduce the drainfield's ability to treat wastewater. Plant only grass and shallow rooting plants over the drainfield area.

If your drainfield is flooded you may begin to notice some utility's not draining properly in the home. Some examples of these issues include toilets flushing slow or making sounds, water backing up into your basement or water filling a sink/shower/bathtub when you flush. All of these issues indicate your septic system is under significant stress. The only way to relieve pressure on the system is by using it less. If possible, reduce or eliminate all water going down the drains until the drainfield dries out. Conserve water to minimize the load on your septic system and only flush the toilet if its absolutely necessary. Skip a bath or shower if you can. Don't run the dishwasher and put off doing laundry until the system has been restored. If you suspect any damage to your septic system or if the water over the drainfield does not recede after the rain stops, have your septic tank professionally inspected.
